Abu Sayyaf, a jihadist terrorist group based in Sulu in the
southwestern Philippines, claims to have kidnapped a 70-year-old German man and
killed his female companion.
The kidnapping, if confirmed, would be the latest in a wave
of sea-borne attacks perpetrated by Abu Sayyaf despite combined efforts of the
Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia to shore up maritime security — and despite
President Rodrigo Duterte’s ramped-up military offensive against the group,
according to the Associated Press.
