A 10-year-old boy was killed in a shopping centre yesterday when a heavy
piece of store furniture fell on top of him. The child suffered severe
head injuries in Topshop (bottom) at the Oracle Shopping Centre (inset)
in Reading, Berkshire. Unconfirmed reports suggest he pulled a barrier
down and it crashed on his head inside the store. He died in hospital an
hour later. Paramedics (top) and police rushed to the Oracle Centre in the pedestrianised area of Reading shortly after 4pm and found the boy lying on the floor. He had a major head trauma and was unconscious. Medics treated him as he lay on the floor before he was rushed to the nearby Royal Berkshire Hospital where he was later confirmed dead.
