Gambia is latest African nation to quit international criminal court

Gambia has announced its withdrawal from the international criminal court, accusing the tribunal of the “persecution and humiliation of people of colour, especially Africans”.
The announcement late on Tuesday came after similar decisions this month by South Africa and Burundi to abandon the troubled institution, set up to handle the world’s worst crimes.
Sheriff Bojang, the information minister, said in an announcement on state television that the court had been used “for the persecution of Africans and especially their leaders” while ignoring crimes committed by the west.
He singled out the case of the former British prime minister Tony Blair, whom the ICC decided not to indict over the Iraq war
“There are many western countries, at least 30, that have committed heinous war crimes against independent sovereign states and their citizens since the creation of the ICC and not a single western war criminal has been indicted,” he said.

Woman recovering after her son stabbed a knife in her head in Kenya

A 60 year-old woman who survived a brutal knife attack is recuperating at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after a successful surgery to remove a knife that was lodged in her head.
Ms Monicah Wanjiru, from Ng’arua, Laikipia West District, was stabbed by her 35 year-old son last week following a dispute.
The son stabbed his mother on her right temple with a kitchen knife.
Ms Wanjiru, a widow, was rushed to Kenyatta Hospital last Saturday.
The delicate surgery was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who included maxillofacial, neurosurgeons, anesthetists and nurses.
According to the hospital, the patient is out of danger and may be discharged soon.
She was traumatised by the incident and is undergoing counseling.

Samson Otieno was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of defiling his two daughters aged 7 and 9 years at their home in Planet estate in Nakuru town.

Court sentences shop owner that refused to sell sugar to 5 years in jail

Dokki Misdemeanor Court sentenced a shop owner based in the Giza suburb of Dokki to five years in jail and a financial fine of EGP 100,000 over charges of seizing commodity rations and refraining from selling them to citizens. According to state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, police forces arrested Magdi Mohamed for refraining from selling sugar to a member of the Supply Investigations Bureau, who was disguised as an ordinary citizen.
Police forces arrested Mohamed after they inspected his shop and found 51 kilos of sugar, Al-Ahram reported.
Last week, General Prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered arrest warrants for a number of Muslim Brotherhood members allegedly accused of forming cells that planned to collect sugar from the Egyptian market, according to local media reports.
The current shortage of sugar in retail outlets began several days ago and came after the market shop for sugar increased from EGP 6 to EGP 12. The sugar price increase stirred ire among the population especially when most have been struggling to adapt financially to the newly implemented value-added tax (VAT), which in some cases nearly doubled the prices of several commodities and services.
The “sugar cell” members are also accused of collecting large amounts of the now scarce commodity from markets. Three of the alleged cell members were arrested at a coffee shop in Nasr City.

Kenya is pushing to increase its market share for coffee in the United States

Kenya is pushing to increase its market share for coffee in the United States (US) as a means of improving the global visibility of the local commodity.

The government through the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority (AFA) Coffee Directorate on Tuesday said it is also targeting China, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland and Nigeria as emerging markets for the coffee.

“Kenya has embarked on an aggressive marketing of her coffee globally. In view of this, the country is set to be the ‘portrait country (main feature)’ during the 2017 Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Exhibition in Seattle, Washington, US,” said Grenville Melli, interim head of the directorate during a briefing in Nairobi.

The SCAA event provides the largest coffee marketing avenue in the world, where producers meet buyers and consumers.

The government is seeking to leverage on various platforms like SCAA, where Kenya is a member, to improve the visibility of the country’s coffee.

“To address the challenges, we shall venture into new markets through participation in various expos, both locally and internationally,” said Richard Lesiyampe, Agriculture principal secretary, in a statement.

As a portrait country in the upcoming SCAA exhibition set for next April Kenya will be given exclusive priority in marketing her coffee in the US during the period of the symposium and exhibitions.
