Man, 25, gets one month in prison for buying stolen property

A Grade 1 Area Court in Karmo, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced a 25-year-old businessman, Saidu Samaila, to one month in prison for receiving stolen property. The presiding judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Samaila an option to pay N5,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes. Samaila, of no fixed address, was convicted for
the one-count charge levelled against him.
He prayed the court to temper justice with mercy that he was unaware it was a stolen property.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told the court that Obinna Otunato of Lokogoma Estate, Abuja, arrested and took him to Life Camp Police Station on Jan. 5.
Auhioboh said when Otunato went to pick his truck, he discovered that one Ezekiel now at large had vandalised the truck and stole the wire inside the vehicle.
The prosecutor added that the convict was aware that the wire was stolen property but he went ahead and bought it at N250.
He noted that the wire was recovered from Samaila during police investigation,
an offence punishable under Section 317 of the Penal Code.
