Despite it proving to be a tricky
encounter, Real Madrid's slim 2-1 victory over Sporting Gijon means
that they enter next week's Clasico as league leaders, regardless of
Barcelona's result at Anoeta on Sunday night.
The win on Saturday afternoon put
Los Blancos on 33 points, seven points ahead of their Catalan rivals, while Sevilla moved into second on 27 points after a 2-1 victory against Valencia.
Real Madrid's 3-0 win at the Vicente Calderon on matchday 12 meant that a nine-point gap opened up between them and their city rivals, Atletico Madrid.
Should Real Madrid record a similar result at the Camp Nou, that would open up a seven-point lead over Barcelona (assuming they beat Real Sociedad on Sunday evening).
After the visit to Barcelona, Zinedine Zidane's side will have already faced their two toughest tests away from home - away at Atletico, and then against Barcelona - but they would still need to travel to Mestalla (Valencia), the Sanchez Pizjuan (Sevilla) and the Madrigal (Villarreal).
