The Russian President has extended an invitation to his Ugandan counterpart to visit
the Kremlin. This is according to the new Russian Ambassador to Uganda,
Alexander Dmitrievich Polyakov, Uganda’s Daily Monitor reports.
A statement from the Presidency disclosed
that Polyakov delivered the invitation from Vladimir Putin whiles presenting his credentials to Yoweri Museveni in mid week.
The Ugandan government is yet to confirm whether Museveni will honour the invitation. The last time the two leaders met was in 2016 when Museveni met Putin at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence outside Moscow.
Bilateral relations between the two countries has reportedly been strengthened in the light of a Russian firm’s planned investment of $4.5m to build an oil refinery in Uganda. The Ugandan Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) continues to cooperate with Russia in the supply of military equipments.
Museveni told the ambassador that Russia should consider building a shipping line linking East Africa to Russia. He is of the view that such an initiative would promote export from the region to Russia.
